Cork – It’s Not Just For Bulletin Boards Anymore
Part of our renovation found us lining the walls of the office and eventually the ceiling in the kitchen with cork. It a wonderful retro 60s/70s treatment and its practical to boot! It makes a perfect memo board. The process isnt difficult just a little messy. Contact cement is the adhesive of choice and its a bit like rubber cement apply it to both surfaces, wait for it to get tacky, then fuse the surfaces together. As with last weeks project, this is essentially a tile job, so plan out your tiles so the seams are centered on the wall for a professional look.
Cork is a wonderful product and was used in lots of applications in mid-century homes. Some examples are:
Flooring: Cork tiles are a great alternative for flooring. They make for a warm, sound absorbing floor surface that has a very mid-century look.
Wall treatments: Like in our project, cork can create a great look for walls and ceilings. It gives your room a very warm, comfortable feel and is perfect for offices and kitchens where it can be used as a memo board. Its also a great background for art.
Accent pieces: Cork was used for lots of home accent pieces including lamps, desk accessories, even furniture. These pieces can be found at thrift shops, vintage stores and online auction sites and make lovely woody touches in your décor.
Try bringing some cork into your home. Its a charming way to bring an unexpected warmth into modern décor.

Savage in the Wild 16
Take a look inside an eco RV. With the installation of 8 solar panels (enough to power your own power tools from the energy of the sun), recycled bamboo flooring, cork ceilings, non-toxic paints and stains, organic and wildcrafted nettle curtains, organic and wildcrafted milkweed comforters, bamboo and organic cotton mattresses and bedding, and more. This green RV was driven all over America by Sunny Savage, as she hosted the television show ‘Hot on the Trail with Sunny Savage’. The show highlights identifying and cooking wild foods, and is an adventure travelogue around America. The motorhome is now for sale, as well as the option to buy the 1998 Black Yamaha Virage 1100cc Special motorcycle parked in the back. Both the motorhome and the motorcycle were featured in the upcoming television series ‘Hot on the Trail with Sunny Savage’.
