My husband and I have a medium shade of oak kitchen cabinets….we just bought bamboo wood flooring which is .?

about 2 shades lighter. We are now thinking we should have bought a few shades darker. Any suggestions?!

Since your kitchen cabinet choice is already a medium shade, a lighter color for the floor will be a good contrast. I think it will help make your kitchen bigger and brighter, whereas a darker shade might box you in. I’m sure it will look fine, good luck!

Replacing a disgusting carpet, what material should I use?

Our livingroom carpet has seen around 10 dogs that weren’t housebroken, two episodes of whipworm, dog vomit, dirty diapers, baby spit up, formula, a variety of food and about 30 gallons of water from a leaking aquarium. It’s a very tightly woven commercial type carpet of a light color that is absolutely NOT standing up to heavy traffic. To make matters worse it wasn’t installed properly and is wearing in areas without a threshhold.

We have a hardwood floor in our Diningroom/Kitchen (10×20) that I absolutely hate. Not only is it a yellow color that won’t even go with a neutral paint, it too was not installed properly and is warping, etc.

We want a non-carpet floor to cover our livingroom, diningroom, kitchen and hallway. I have heard good and bad things about bamboo, hard wood and laminate flooring. What would you recommend for a very high traffic area, small kids and dogs? We’d like something that will last and not cost a small fortune to put in. The total area (for the sake of a nice round number) is around 600 square feet.

Any brands that are better than others would be great. I’d love something that we can install ourselves.

Also, is there anyway to "recycle" the current wood floor?

These days Concrete Floors have become very popular. They solve all the problems that you are having currently with carpets. Concrete floors are beautiful, affordable and durable.

Is this a good beginning to a teens book?

Spending the last day of school sick in bed, wasn’t what I planned. I planned to spend it with my friends, in the gloomy hallways of our high school. When the final bell would ring, we would all go to the beach and start soaking up the sun. But, no, my plans were ruined thanks to my nausea and fever. After watching a few minutes of never ending commercials, I flicked off the TV and got up out of bed. My feet were cold once they touched the bamboo flooring in my room. I shiver and pull a blanket off my bed and wrap it around me. I walk to the top of my stairs, about to take the first step down, and I hear my stomach growl. The kitchen was in front of the stairs, so I didn’t have a long way to go to get to my destination. My kitchen was small, just a fridge, a pantry, a stove, a microwave- the normal deal. I could still smell the bowl of chicken noodle soup I left on the counter this morning. I grab the bowl then go to the pantry and grab some saltine crackers. I sit down at the kitchen table and start eating my cold soup, one spoonful at a time. My house was quiet. It always was ever since my dad died three years ago. He had a heart attack and he was gone before the ambulance even got him to the hospital. My mom was always trying to keep everything calm and in tact. She was tall, blonde, and had pretty blue eyes. She was always smiling and making the best of the situation. I definitely didn’t get my look, or attitude, from her. I was tall, brown haired, and had brown eyes. My mom always said I looked exactly like my dad. I heard my mom talking on the phone in the other room. I got up and grabbed the other land-line phone and listened in. “…Well who else got sick?” my mother asked. A man with a deep voice started talking and I recognized him as my principal, Mr. Gonzales, “Keith, Kayla, and Khloe Johnson, Taylor and Cassandra Layser, Mason Downey, Aaron Stepps, Tatum Oliver, Mitchie Tyler, and of course, your daughter.” My mom started making a humming noise on the other end of the phone. “Okay, thank you so much, Haydin is in her room resting so I better go check on her, thank you so much for calling.” Just as Mr. Gonzales was starting to thank her back, I clicked off the phone, and ran back to the table so my mom didn’t know I eavesdropped on her. I made it back to the table before she walked into the room. “Oh,“ she said surprised, “ Good Morning, Sweetie. Are you feeling better?” Her short curls were tied back in a bun and a pencil was stuck through it. She was also wearing a tank top and shorts, which meant she had been painting. She wasn’t a professional, she just did it for fun, but she was really good. “Not much better,” I say frowning, “I still feel dizzy all the time, and I am burning up.” She sat down oh-so-motherly next to me and patted my hand. “If you aren’t better by tomorrow, I’ll take you to the doctor.” I smile sympathetically, trying not to hurt her feelings, and shake my head “ok”. She kisses my forehead with her thin, pale lips and starts walking to the other room. “If you need me, just call me,” she said over her shoulder. I tried finishing my soup, but my stomach refused, so I just put it in the fridge.
i know that the tenses are all wrong, sorry about that! it was just an idea i had to jot down. and i ment to put in that the story is about 10 teenagers who get powers and they try and keep it a secret and there are bad guys after them and they are pretty much fighting off the bad guys. Im realy bad at explaining it, but it sounds better then the way i said it :) and thanks to everyone who commented!!! :) <3

It’s kind of boring at the begining cuz it has a repeating step by step explanation thing. You need more creative descriptive words. What does her room look like? Her house? What is the story even about? A bunch of people who have swine flu? Write about somthing a little more interesting, like, a deadly flu that attacks the world and a girl’s story of how she tries to survive the new, changing life around her. Or a girl who’s fellow students keep dying all around her, and its up to her and a few of her friends to figure out whats going on and who the murderer is. Happy writing :)

House partialy burnt, Fireman pumped 83,000 gal water throughout house.?

Contractor, left ash, small debris on flore of house, soaked with water for over a month. He removed the small white oak hardwood from three bedrooms and hall and 3/4 particle board from kitchen, dining, and living room exposing soaked 1/2 inch plywood throughout the house. in less than a month the flooring man put bamboo flooring on all rooms except bath, which he put ceramic tile, no problem there, but all the rest of the house the boards of bamboo are warping. he said he would fix it. My question is; are there hardwood flooring that is not affected by moisture. The sub flooring from underneath the house looks new, but the moisture meter read as high as it would register. How to fix?

Contact your insurance company! They should have made arrangements to have a water /remediation company come out. They would have removed all the water , flooring and dry wall and dried it all out. The fact the moisture meter reads off the scale tells us that the house hasn’t been dried properly. Contact your insurance company asap as excess moisture can cause you to have a mold problem in the future which can cause health problems

Cork – It’s Not Just For Bulletin Boards Anymore

Part of our renovation found us lining the walls of the office and eventually the ceiling in the kitchen with cork. It a wonderful retro 60s/70s treatment and its practical to boot! It makes a perfect memo board. The process isnt difficult just a little messy. Contact cement is the adhesive of choice and its a bit like rubber cement apply it to both surfaces, wait for it to get tacky, then fuse the surfaces together. As with last weeks project, this is essentially a tile job, so plan out your tiles so the seams are centered on the wall for a professional look.

Cork is a wonderful product and was used in lots of applications in mid-century homes. Some examples are:

Flooring: Cork tiles are a great alternative for flooring. They make for a warm, sound absorbing floor surface that has a very mid-century look.

Wall treatments: Like in our project, cork can create a great look for walls and ceilings. It gives your room a very warm, comfortable feel and is perfect for offices and kitchens where it can be used as a memo board. Its also a great background for art.

Accent pieces: Cork was used for lots of home accent pieces including lamps, desk accessories, even furniture. These pieces can be found at thrift shops, vintage stores and online auction sites and make lovely woody touches in your décor.

Try bringing some cork into your home. Its a charming way to bring an unexpected warmth into modern décor.

What shade of red would look good on the walls in my kitchen/dining area?

There is a lot of natural light coming through the windows and the skylight in this area. The cabinets are light colored oak and counter tops are beige. The floor is tiger strand bamboo (which has shade of light and dark browns mingled together). I also want to recover the cushions on my chairs after the walls are painted so if you could also suggest coordinating colors I would appreciate it.

Experiment with this site. How about "red tomato" or "rave red"?

buying a house that needs a little work?

I am a single mother who is thinking of buying a house that needs a little fixing up. From what I can see it will need new windows, a small wall built for a bathroom, a new front door and new porch. They have completely redone the kitchen already and have bamboo flooring ready to install. The house is priced low enough that I can afford it no problem, but I’ve never bought a house that needs any work before. I am going to get it looked over very closely before I make any offer, but I just wanted any advice any one has who may have ever bought or had an older house that needed some work. Thanks

I am a single mother who is thinking of buying a house that needs a little fixing up.

Hi,
New windows, door & porch are more than a little fixing up. Add the price of those repairs + the offer will equal what you’re really paying.

We are about to have a wood floor installed in our family room which abuts our large eat-in kitchen mainly?

for the below reasons:

1. Provide more continuity since the kitchen is right "next door".
Our wood floor in the kitchen is stained red oak.

2. Our carpet is badly stained (thanks to messy kids and naughty 5
lb. chihuahuas). We’ve been told hardwood floors are easier to keep
clean when having to wipe up after the Chihuahua (thank goodness
she is not a big breed).

3. We are hoping our Chihuahua doesn’t even soil the new hardwood
since all prior scents will be gone — and FYI she has never gone on
our hardwood throughtout the house (fingers crossed!)

So here, finally, is my question:

In speaking with several friends who are really involved with animal rescue and often foster cats and dogs until a home can be found for them — they have all recommended BAMBOO wood flooring. They say it is not as attractive to dogs with housebreaking issues — but easier to clean if there are any "accidents". It is less expensive, but I wonder if it is durable and will last as long as traditional wood floors — and also would they be able to match bamboo with my existing kitchen red oak flooring?

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

I would suggest a different floor colour, or have the kitchen flooring restained to match the new floor. Bamboo is getting rave reviews. Personally I do not know anything about it, but talk in detail with the people you know who have it. You might want to consider laminate, or tiles, but tiles can be cold on the feet in winter if you have that. Laminate is inexpensive enough that it can be replaced in a few years if needed. Tiles (ceramic or Porcelain) can be extremely durable with animals. You can replace your flooring with wood, but the problem is the colour. If you can bring home samples (most flooring stores allow this) to hold up against your kitchen floor you will be able to get a better idea of what will look great and be what you need while living with animals in training. Be sure to have a very indepth conversation with the professionals at the flooring store..they can suggest ideas for durability/scratch resistance flooring.
